STEP 3 Plan of Action

Select appropriate sites for sorting, cleaning, and packing damaged materials.

Determine which Disaster Team Members will be needed and the division of duties, establish a place of assembly, and notify team members.

Determine if Disaster Team Members will be need to be relieved, refreshed, or replaced and how this will be done.

Determine which salvage materials/ resources/services will be needed. Assemble supplies.

In-house - located in tech services (receiving room)

Plastic sheeting, newsprint, etc

Commercial suppliers ---

Crates, freezers, truck, etc

Commercial Salvage Services -

Professional conservators, consultants

Determine which among damaged materials should be salvaged first and which might be better to discard. Consult Salvage Priorities on pg 39.

Determine appropriate salvage methods considering staff and labor costs, direct costs, extent of damage. See pg 40 for options on water damaged materials and freezing methods.

Determine procedures to account for or inventory boxes and crates of materials as they are processed through salvage area and as they are sent to freezers, etc.

Prepare to document and photograph the damage and restoration procedures used on collections as well as on equipment for insurance and warranty requirements.

Set priorities on what services will be restored first.

Make arrangements with other libraries to provide services and resources to our patrons if recovery time will be lengthy. Notify Kennesaw Statue College and Southern Polytechnic College that our students will be utilizing our joint use agreement more fully. Such arrangements might include special checkout privileges and/or access to selected resources.

Stop returns of items to this library, if necessary, until circulation and stacks are able to receive them.

Stop incoming acquisitions or temporarily divert them to safe storage.
