STEP 2 Assess the Damage

 

Through inspection of the disaster area, the Disaster Team Coordinator and the Salvage Coordinator will determine the kind and scale of the damage and the resources needed to handle the disaster.

 

A. Type of damage to collection?

 

Burned materials

Water damaged, damp, swollen materials

Dirty materials

Mold, mildew

Insects

 

B. Number of items affected?

 

Estimate numbers from size of volumes and from length of shelving they occupy.

C. Types of materials affected?

 

Bindings (eg. vellum, leather, cloth)

Unbound printed materials

Rare or valuable items, those of highest priority on Priority List (see pg 36 for Salvage Priorities)

 

D. Is the water in the flooded area contaminated?

 

Soot, ash

Dirt

Sewage

 

E. Will sterilization or decontamination be necessary before or after salvage work?

 

F. Is the collection safe from theft? Will it be necessary to seal off salvage area?

 

G. Is the building damaged? Will undamaged items need to be relocated to temporary storage until building can be repaired?
