Disaster R and R Plan : Salvage and Recovery Step 1

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 5 months ago

STEP 1 Stabilize the Area

The environment must be stabilized and controlled before salvage work may begin.

NOTE: Maintenance (ext 4018 or 404-382-9804) will take care of stabilizing the area. This material should be used as guidelines to assist Maintenance (ext 4018 or 404-382-9804).

Supply lines of water and electricity, as appropriate, may need to be turned off. Emergency personnel will do this in the event that staff access is restricted. Locations are as follows:

Water:

Electricity

For emergency power, locate generator through Maintenance (ext 4018 or 404-382-9804).

Damaged materials should not be removed until an assessment has been made and appropriate salvage procedures determined.

Water damage

Minimize water damage by covering undamaged dry books and materials with plastic sheeting from disaster storage shelves (tech services, receiving room).

Turn off the heat in the disaster area.

Reduce temperature to at least 65 degrees. Reduce humidity to at least 60% by opening doors, and using fans to expel humid air. Use dehumidifiers in small enclosed area. Locations:

Fans: electrical dept, call Maintenance (ext 4018 or 404-382-9804)

Dehumidifiers: rent, see pg 35 for rental information

DO NOT open or disturb wet books and materials.

DISCONNECT POWER from all electronic equipment (computers, etc).

Insect or Rodent Infestation

Identify the source of the infestation and eliminate it. Dispose of waste and debris; plug up holes that may serve as access points.

Capture a specimen to have it identified. Record the date and location of capture. Consult entomologist or exterminator, if necessary for identification and advice.
