Disaster R and R Plan : Fire and or Smoke

Fire and/or Smoke

 

• Assess your safety and act accordingly

• Assess safety of collections and facilities

• Elicit support from your supervisor or co-worker

• In the event of visible flames and/or large quantities of smoke:

o Move away from the fire and smoke.

o Close doors and windows if time permits.

o Take personal belongings if time permits.

o Touch closed doors. DO NOT open them if they are hot.

o Pull an alarm as you leave the building.

o Move away from the building when evacuating.

o Notify the fire department from a nearby phone to provide further information. Call 9-911 from a campus phone or 911 from any pay phone (no coins needed).

 

• Note: if your clothes catch on fire: Stop, Drop, and Roll to extinguish flames.

 

In the event of small amounts of smoke, no visible fire:

 

Primary Response:

• Call Maintenance (ext 4018 or 404-382-9804), 8-5pm; Call NMTC Security (cell phone 770-529-2311), after 5pm and on weekends.

 

Secondary Response:

• Investigate cause of smoke and be prepared to provide information.

• Alert co-workers that smoke is present and be ready to take further action if necessary.
